Whereas dies are used to thread an O.D., taps are used to thread an I.D. Taps function by cutting threads on the inside surface of a part so it’s prepared to receive a mating bolt. We offer a wide selection of thread taps, including spiral point taps, spiral flute taps, straight flute taps, screw thread taps, pipe taps, forming taps, and more.

Spiral Point Taps

Also known as gun taps, spiral point taps have a 2-4 thread lead that is designed for through hole applications or where there is sufficient clearance at the bottom of the hole. The spiral point pushes the chip ahead of the tap.

Spiral Flute Taps SPIRAL FLUTE 30°

Spiral fluted taps are commonly used in blind holes and are designed to pull the chip out of the hole. Spiral fluted taps allow the thread to be produced to the bottom of the hole.

Straight Flute Taps

Straight flute taps are the common choice for most general purpose applications. They are designed with straight threads, which leave a ribbed or corrugated texture in pre-drilled holes. Typically, holes tapped with straight flute taps require finishing operations.

Screw Thread Insert Taps

Also known as S.T.I. Taps, screw thread taps produce an oversized hole to accommodate a standard screw thread insert. Screw thread inserts are used to strengthen the nut and prevent stripping of the threads.

Pipe Taps

Pipe taps are smaller compared to other types of taps to enhance sealing power. These taps are well suited to low clearance applications, and are commonly used to tap inside pipes.

Forming Taps Forming Tap

Forming taps create threads by displacing the material in larger diameter blind holes. Forming taps are different from cutting threads in that they do not cut away material, and therefore, do not produce any chips.
